CDC Updates Chronic Pain Guidelines: What Patients Need to Know
The CDC has released revised guidelines for prescribing opioids, acknowledging that the 2016 guidelines were misapplied and caused harm to chronic pain patients. Here is what changed and what it means for you.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published updated clinical practice guidelines for prescribing opioids, replacing the controversial 2016 guidelines that many experts say were weaponized against chronic pain patients.
The new guidelines explicitly state that dosage limits should not be applied rigidly, that patients already on stable opioid regimens should not be force-tapered, and that the decision to prescribe opioids should be individualized between patient and provider.
While patient advocates welcome these changes, many worry that the damage from years of misapplication may take much longer to undo. Pharmacies, insurers, and state medical boards have built policies around the old guidelines that continue to create barriers for patients.
