How to Prepare for Your Pain Specialist Appointment
Getting the most out of a pain specialist visit requires preparation. Use this guide to document your symptoms, organize your medical history, and advocate effectively for your care.
A pain specialist appointment typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes. In that short window, you need to communicate months or years of suffering clearly and effectively. Preparation is your most powerful tool.
Start a pain journal at least two weeks before your appointment. Track your pain levels on a 1-10 scale three times daily, noting what makes pain better or worse, how it affects sleep and daily activities, and any patterns you notice. Bring this journal to your appointment.
Prepare a one-page medical summary that includes your diagnosis history, current medications (including dosages), treatments you have tried and their outcomes, and your top three treatment goals. Hand this to your doctor at the start of the visit so they have context before the conversation begins.
